What is Wheat Rava Kesari/ Samba Rava kesari?

Samba Rava / Godhuma Rava is also called as wheat Rava is a durum wheat product and form of semolina. It is made of grinding husked wheat and it is widely used in Indian cuisine.

This wheat Rava is nutritious, it has a good source of iron and magnesium.

Making Godhuma Rava halwa is So So good and equally nutritious. The texture of the samba Rava Kesari is lightly grainy than the regular Rava Kesari.

This taste is delightful and can be served after a meal or can be prepared during any celebrations, festival or any special occasions.

How to make Samba Rava kesari:

Heat ghee in a non-stick pan/ iron Kadai. Add cashews

Fry them to a light golden colour.

Add 3 cups of water
a small glass bowl of orange food colour is being added to deep pot
Add orange food colour
orange coloured water is boiled in white sauce pan
Over medium heat, bring the water to boil
a small bowl of crushed cardamom is being added
Add the crushed cardamom
a bowl of wheat rava is being added
Once the water comes to boil, Add samba Rava or wheat rava.

Quickly stir to avoid the lumps.

Cover with the pan and cook for 20 minutes.

Tips to make the best Godhuma Rava Halwa:

1. I have used roasted wheat rava, you may roast the rava in ghee for a minute before you proceed.

2. Unlike other Rava Kesari recipe,  samba Rava requires more liquid to cook.

So, just make sure to add the right amount of water to cook the wheat rava and to get the right consistency.

3. I have added cashews, you may add almonds, raisins, walnuts or any nuts as your preference.

4. Adding quality ghee gives you the best flavour for this recipe.

5. I have used orange food colour, you may use yellow food colour.

6. Add wheat rava after the water comes to boil.

7. Make sure to stir the water while you add the Rava that helps to remove the lumpiness.

8. Add sugar, only after the Rava is cooked.

9. This recipe can be prepared using a pressure cooker, you can cook the wheat rava for 2 hisses and let the pressure releases naturally.

Possible variations:

1. Godhumai rava Kesari with Jaggery: You may use 2 cups of jaggery instead of white sugar. Taste and add as per your preference.

2. With Palm jaggery /karupaati: You May 2 cups of palm jaggery. Allow the jaggery to melt in 1 cup of water to make jaggery syrup.

FAQS:

1. How long can I store the Rava Kesari?

Leftover can be stored in an air-tight container and refrigerated for 3 days.

Before you serve, Heat in microwave for a minute or cook in the pan till it’s just heated up. Drizzle some ghee if needed.

2. What is the water ratio for Samba Rava Kesari?

The water ratio for samba Rava Kesari recipe is 1 cup of samba Rava requires 3 cups of water for a closed pan.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon ghee
  • 10 to 15 no Cashews
  • 6 cups of water
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange food colour
  • 3 cardamoms
  • 2 cups Wheat Rava
  • 3 cups of sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee in a non-stick pan/ iron Kadai. Add cashews
  2. Fry them to a light golden colour.
  3. Add 3 cups of water
  4. Add orange food colour
  5. Over medium heat, bring the water to boil
  6. Add the crushed cardamom
  7. Once the water comes to boil, Add samba Rava or wheat rava.
  8. Quickly stir to avoid the lumps.
  9. Cover with the pan and cook for 20 minutes.
  10. Once the rava is cooked and water has been absorbed.
  11. Add sugar.
  12. Stir for 2 minutes, the sugar would melt to get a creamy consistency.

    How do I know the rava is cooked? Mine looked cooked under 10 mins itself. And I proceeded. It tastes good, but how to know for sure that rava is cooked?

      Hi Gomathy, When you press with your fingers, the texture of the cooked samba Rava is Soften which means the rava is cooked.
