Mutton Stew

This mutton stew recipe is so easy, healthy and comforting! It is a perfect make-ahead recipe, with lovely flavours of coconut milk makes it truly delicious.


  • 350 grams Mutton
  • 1 potato
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 cup sliced onion
  • 2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon pepper powder
  • 1 cinnamon
  • 4 cloves
  • 3 cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon pepper powder
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil


To pressure cook mutton:

  1. Add mutton to the pressure cooker, then onion, tomato, ginger-garlic paste, curry leaves, pepper powder and salt.
  2. Mix everything well using your fingers and lightly crush the tomato.
  3. Add enough water to cook the mutton pieces. Cover with lid and let the mutton cook for 4 to 5 hisses until its tender.
  4. While the mutton is being cooked, Let’s boil potato and carrot . Once it is cooked set aside.
  5. Allow the pressure release naturally, lightly poke the mutton pieces to check for the doneness.
  6. To make stew:
  7. Heat coconut oil in saute pan, add cinnamon, cloves, cardamom.,Add some few sprigs of curry leaves.
  8. Add sliced onions.Cook the onions till they turn to a light golden
  9. Add the cooked mutton along with liquid left. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.
  10. Add boiled potatoes and carrot and add 1/2 cups of water that has been used to boil the veggies. Stir and cook for a few minutes.
  11. Add coconut milk
  12. Add a spoon of coconut oil. Stir and cook for minute. Turn off the heat. Serve.


Tips to make the best Mutton Stew Recipe: 

Mutton: The taste of the mutton curry depends on the quality of the meat. Getting fresh tender Lamb/mutton pieces to gives you greater taste.

Veggies: I have added potato and carrot, you may add peas, cauliflower or beans. These veggies perfectly work for this mutton stew recipe. 

Coconut milk: I have added freshly pressed coconut milk, it has got more intense flavour. You may use store-bought coconut milk as well. 

Fresh ginger garlic: Always use freshly crushed ginger garlic. I’m sure you gonna love the tidbits of ginger garlic in your curry. 

Coconut oil: Adding coconut oil as final touch is optional. You may use gingerly oil or sesame oil.
