This mutton stew recipe is so easy, healthy and comforting! It is a perfect make-ahead recipe, with lovely flavours of coconut milk makes it truly delicious.

This Mutton stew recipe is my another favourite recipe, the mutton pieces are well cooked and it is melted in your mouth tender, richly coconut milk gravy, perfectly seasoned.

Mutton Stew is Staple comfort food made in heaven! It is mildly spiced, it is also a great way of getting children to eat their vegetables and mutton as they are so tender and soft.

What is Mutton Stew?

This mutton stew has the infused flavours of coconut milk and widely popular in the southern part of India Kerala. Here is the mutton is cooked delectable with vegetable simmering in the gravy.

What is mutton stew is made of?

Here are the ingredients for a mutton stew,

Potato, carrot, coconut milk, pepper powder, coconut oil, cinnamon, cloves, onion, tomato and curry leaves, ginger garlic paste.

How to make Mutton Stew:

Ingredients to make mutton stew are taken.
onion, tomato, curry leaves, ginger garlic paste, mutton pieces are in sauce pan
To a pressure cooker, add mutton, onion, tomato, ginger-garlic paste, curry leaves

Add pepper powder
onion, tomato, curry leaves, mutton, pepper powder, salt in sauce pan
Add salt

Mix everything well using your fingers and lightly crush the tomato.

We have added enough water to cook the mutton pieces. Cover with lid and let the mutton cook for 4 to 5 hisses until its tender.
Boil potato and carrot in sauce pan
While the mutton is cooked, Let’s boil potato and carrot for 10 minutes until it is cooked. Set aside.

Allow the pressure release naturally, now the mutton is well cooked.

Heat coconut oil in saute pan, add cinnamon, cloves, cardamom.

Add some few sprigs of curry leaves.

Cook the onions till they turn to a light golden

Add the cooked mutton along with liquid left. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.

Add boiled potatoes and carrot and add 1/2 cups of water that has been used to boil the veggies. Stir and cook for a few minutes.

A spoonful of oil is being added to mutton stew ion sauce pan
Add a spoon of coconut oil. Stir and cook for a minute. Turn off the heat. Serve.

Tips to make the best Mutton Stew Recipe:

Mutton: The taste of the mutton curry depends on the quality of the meat. Getting fresh tender Lamb/mutton pieces to gives you greater taste.

Veggies: I have added potato and carrot, you may add peas, cauliflower or beans. These veggies perfectly work for this mutton stew recipe. 

Coconut milk: I have added freshly pressed coconut milk, it has got more intense flavour. You may use store-bought coconut milk as well. 

Fresh ginger garlic: Always use freshly crushed ginger garlic. I’m sure you gonna love the tidbits of ginger garlic in your curry. 

Coconut oil: Adding coconut oil as final touch is optional. You may use gingerly oil or sesame oil.

How do you serve Mutton stew?

Serving Mutton Stew with Appam is the classic combination. You can serve with idly, dosa or roti. OR Simply serve a like a soup with crusty bread!

How long can I refrigerate this stew recipe?

This mutton stew can be refrigerated for 2 days if properly stored in an air-tight container.

I wouldn’t recommend refrigerating for more than a day as it has coconut milk.

If you intend to freeze more than a week, avoid adding coconut milk.

You may add coconut milk just before serving.

How long does it take for the mutton cook?

It depends on the meat. If the mutton/lamb is tender and soft it requires 3 to 4 whistles to pressure cook. Or you may need 5 to 6 whistles to make it tender.

Ingredients

  • 350 grams Mutton
  • 1 potato
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 cup sliced onion
  • 2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon pepper powder
  • 1 cinnamon
  • 4 cloves
  • 3 cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon pepper powder
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

Instructions

To pressure cook mutton:

  1. Add mutton to the pressure cooker, then onion, tomato, ginger-garlic paste, curry leaves, pepper powder and salt.
  2. Mix everything well using your fingers and lightly crush the tomato.
  3. Add enough water to cook the mutton pieces. Cover with lid and let the mutton cook for 4 to 5 hisses until its tender.
  4. While the mutton is being cooked, Let’s boil potato and carrot . Once it is cooked set aside.
  5. Allow the pressure release naturally, lightly poke the mutton pieces to check for the doneness.
  6. To make stew:
  7. Heat coconut oil in saute pan, add cinnamon, cloves, cardamom.,Add some few sprigs of curry leaves.
  8. Add sliced onions.Cook the onions till they turn to a light golden
  9. Add the cooked mutton along with liquid left. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.
  10. Add boiled potatoes and carrot and add 1/2 cups of water that has been used to boil the veggies. Stir and cook for a few minutes.
  11. Add coconut milk
  12. Add a spoon of coconut oil. Stir and cook for minute. Turn off the heat. Serve.
