What is mushroom stroganoff? 

This stew of Russian origin is originally prepared with veal but admits variations. The important thing is cooking in a creamy and soft sauce with cream, tomato and almost caramelized onion base.

 Originally, the stroganoff – that’s what we have called it for a lifetime – is a beef tenderloin stew with mushrooms, onion and a creamy sauce made with cream that in Russia has always been accompanied with straw-type fries.

World history wanted the Russian Revolution, back in 1917, to take this dish to China – where it began to be consumed accompanied by rice and without cream – and also to the United States, where it was used as a sauce for some noodles (slightly altering its content).

What is stroganoff sauce made of?

This stroganoff sauce is made of butter, garlic, onion, tomato puree, mustard paste and finished with fresh cream! It is flavoured with seasonings like mixed herbs, oregano and pepper powder.

How To make Mushroom Vegetarian Stroganoff:

Over medium heat, To a saute pan, melt butter.

Add minced garlic. Stir and cook for 1 minute.

Once the butter has all the garlic flavours induced, add chopped onion.

Stir and cook for 3 to 5 mins till the onions turn to a light golden brown.

Now, add sliced mushrooms.

Add all the seasonings pepper powder, oregano, mixed herbs, Dijon mustard, salt. Stir and cook for 2 mins.

Stir the tomato puree and cook until the raw smell of the tomatoes disappears

Add fresh cream and 1/4 cup of warm water. The 1/4 cup of water is to dilute the cream to get a creamy consistency.

Stir the creamy mushroom stroganoff and cook for 2 mins. Sprinkle fresh parsley or dill leaves.

Tips to make the best stroganoff recipe:  

1.Mushroom: Get a fresh and tender mushroom for the best results. Wash the mushrooms and dry them well. Cut them in half.

While the button mushrooms/portobello mushrooms are delicious in a creamy sauce, try shiitakes for different flavours! 

2. Onions: Cook the onions in butter till the onion turns a light golden colour.  

3. Spices: There are no fancy spices have been added! Then basic mixed herbs, oregano and pepper powder are enough to make this recipe delicious. 

4. Dijon mustard: Adding this one epic ingredient to mushroom stroganoff gives you adorable flavours. 

5. Cream/sour cream: Traditionally sour cream is used, I have used fresh cream that elevates the taste and texture of the recipe.

 1. What do you eat with mushroom stroganoff? 

This can be served with pasta, rice noodles, steam beans, mashed potatoes, sautéed potatoes, garlic bread etc. 

2. How do you thicken mushroom stroganoff sauce? 

If your sauce is thinner than you’d think, you can thicken by adding a slurry of water and flour. 

3. Can you freeze mushroom stroganoff? 

The dairy products tend to splits up when frozen, If you have plans to freeze the stroganoff, avoid adding cream.

When you re-heat the stroganoff add cream. 

4. How long can we refrigerate vegetarian stroganoff? 

This mushroom stroganoff recipe stays well for a couple of days Store them in properly in an air-tight container.

5. What is the best meat to use with mushroom stroganoff

  • 1 cup of mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon butter
