What is General Tso’s Chicken?

The deep flavored, crisply fried, and smoothly garnished Tso’s Chicken is a dish that was traditionally made in China.

It is also called as General Tao Chicken, Zuo Gong Ji. 

Legend says Chang-Kuei invented General Tso’s chicken in the 1950s while serving a group of U.S. military members.

And after President Richard Nixon had it, this dish became super famous. Made in the most authentic Chinese way, this dish can be the best chicken dish on the list.

It is easy and simple to make, and serves in less than half an hour! So what are we waiting for, let’s get started?

The dish is a perfect snack time starter for a small party and is very easy to make.

How to make General Tso’s Chicken:

Heat some oil in a pot to deep fry.

Meanwhile will make the chicken batter, Take chicken in a mixing bowl, add cornflour, all-purpose flour, pepper powder, salt, and minced garlic.

Mix the chicken to coat the dry ingredients. I haven’t added water. The moisture in the chicken is enough to coat. If you want, you can add just a teaspoon of water for binding.

Drop the chicken one by one in the oil.

Fry them for 5 to 6 minutes to a nice golden brown

Take out the fried chicken, collect in the bowl, and set aside.

To make Sauce:

Heat oil in the cast iron pan/wok. Add minced garlic and ginger. Stir fry for few seconds.

Stir in the dry red chilies, cook for just a few seconds.

Stir in the Homemade Hoisin sauce.

Add some vinegar, water, sugar.

Stir and cook for 5 minutes, till the sauce is slightly thickened.

Add the fried chicken

Toss the chicken just to coat the sauce. Sprinkle sesame seeds and serve.

Tips to make the best Chicken Tso’s!

1. Clean the chicken and soak in lukewarm water for 5 minutes.

2. You may use chicken with bone-in or boneless. Dice them in a bite-sized.

3. You could use rice flour instead of corn-starch also.

4. Don’t over fry the chicken as it would lead to a hard, fry till the chicken is light brownish.

5. Mix the chicken in the sauce 10 minutes before serving as adding beforehand can make the chicken soggy.

6. You can use dried chilies and sesame seeds to garnish the dish.

Ingredients

To chicken batter:

  • 1/2 kg chicken
  • 3 tablespoon cornflour
  • 3 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup of vegetable oil

To make the sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger (minced)
  • 5 Dry red chilies
  • 3 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • A pinch of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds.

Instructions

To make chicken batter:

  5. Take out the fried chicken, collect in the bowl, and set aside.

  5. Add the fried chicken. Toss the chicken just to coat the sauce. Sprinkle sesame seeds and serve.

Notes

Chefs hack to make the best Chicken Tso’s!
