What is enchilada sauce?

Enchilada sauce also called salsa Roja is a type of red sauce in Mexican cuisine.

It is the sauce made of tomato, onion garlic, cumin, oregano all simmered together in the tomato sauce until thickened.

This red enchilada sauce is used in the preparation of Mexican foods, primarily in enchiladas!

Sometimes this homemade enchilada sauce is used for tacos or quesadillas, tacos or burritos.

Enchilada sauce is made of, tomato puree, chilli powder, garlic powder, onion powder,
Oregano, vegetable /chicken stock and flour.

How to make Homemade Enchilada sauce Recipe:

To a saucepan, add olive oil
olive oil and flour in deep sauce pan
Once the oil is heated up, add flour, stir and cook for 1 minute.

Add the spice powders.

Stir and cook for few seconds over low- medium heat.

Add the tomato puree and vegetable stock

Cover and cook for 3 to 4 minutes to get a creamy enchilada sauce.

Tips to make the Best Red Enchilada Sauce:

1.Spice level: The spice Level of the enchilada sauce can be adjusted as per your preference.

If you would like to get spicier, you may add pepper powder as well.

2.Roux: Once you add the flour, whisk quickly to avoid any lumps and the flour should be stirred for 1 minute to remove the raw flavours.

3.Seasoning: Once you add the seasonings, keep in the low flame. The spices might brown quickly.

4.Vegetable stock/ Chicken Stock: Th chicken stocks have more flavours than the vegetable stock, I had vegetable stock cubes so I have added it.

5.Tomato Puree: Once you add the tomato puree, cover with the lid and cook because the tomato puree tends to spills out!

1.How long does enchilada sauce last in the fridge?

The leftover enchilada sauce can be stored in an air-tight container and last in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.

And can be frozen for 3 months.

2. What are ways to use this homemade enchilada sauce?

This enchilada sauce can be used in Classic enchilada, pasta, burritos, tacos, quesadillas or can be served as a dip.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Tomato Puree
  • 1.5 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup vegetable stock

Instructions

  1. Ingredients to make enchilada sauce are taken.
  2. To a saucepan, add olive oil
  3. Once the oil is heated up, add flour, stir and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add the spice powders.
  5. Stir and cook for few seconds over low- medium heat.
  6. Add the tomato puree and vegetable stock
  7. Cover and cook for 3 to 4 minutes to get a creamy enchilada sauce.

Notes

Tips to make the Best Enchilada Sauce:
