This dal tadka recipe is one of the famous Indian recipes that is exceptionally good with basic ingredients, so creamy, heartily comforting! This is the dal fry you need any time of your day.


  • 1/2 cup Toor dal
  • 1onion
  • 1 tomato
  • 2 green chilli
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1teaspoon salt
  • 2.5 cups of water.
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

For seasoning:

  • 1 Tablespoon ghee (clarified Butter)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 6 garlic pods
  • 3 dry red chilli
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida


  1. Wash Toor dal for a couple of time, add to the pressure cooker.
  2. Add sliced onion, chopped tomato, green chilli, curry leaves, turmeric powder, and salt. Add 2.5 cups of water and pressure cook for 4 to 5 hisses.
  3. Release the pressure naturally! Then, using balloon whisk mix the dal till they are lightly creamy. Add sugar and stir.
  4. For tadka:
  5. Heat ghee in a small tadka pan, add cumin seeds, crushed garlic, dry red chilli, curry leaves. Stir for a minute.
  6. Add the seasonings to the dal. Mix and serve.


Tips to make the best dal Tadka:

Use ghee for best flavours for this recipe. You may use sesame oil or any vegetable oil will work fine!

Lightly Crush the garlic with skin on for seasoning that brings out the great flavour and taste to this recipe.

Add a little pinch of sugar that works like a magic for this recipe.

Add some chopped coriander leaves before you serve.
