Cabbage poriyal or muttaikose poriyal ( in Tamil) is one classic recipe that is the chopped cabbage with lightly spiced dry red chillies, green chilli and stir-fried with grated coconut that gives you intricate texture.

The seasonings are mustard seeds and urad dal is roasted to a golden brown colour that gives you nutty crunch to this cabbage poriyal.

It is served as side dishes for sambar rice, rasam rice or even for roti.

Every household has its version of cabbage poriyal.

This is such a one classic and simple recipe!

How to make cabbage Poriyal:

These all the ingredients to make cabbage Poriyal
urad dal and mustard seeds are fried in oil in white sauce pan
Heat coconut oil in saucepan/Kadai. Add mustard seeds once its splutters, add urad dal fry for 10 to 20 seconds.

Tear the dry red chillies, add-in.

Add chopped onion, salt fry till the onions turn translucent.

Add sliced green chilli, fry for few seconds.

Then in goes chopped cabbage

Stir and cook for 3 minutes

Add water, cover and cook for another 5 minutes. Stirring occasionally.

Once the cabbage is cooked, add grated coconut

Stir the cabbage for 1 minute. Cabbage poriyal/cabbage thoran is ready.

Tips to make Cabbage Thoran:

1.Cabbage: Get the cabbage that is crisp and fresh. You can choose the purple cabbage as well.

2.Coconut oil: I have used coconut oil for this recipe, you can swap to any vegetable oil, gingelly oil or sesame oil.

3.Seasoning: I have used urad dal, you may use channa dal for the more crunchy texture.

4.Coconut: Adding freshly grated coconut gives you more flavours to this recipe. If you do not have coconut feel free to add desiccated coconut.

5.Veggies: You may add chopped carrots and peas along with the cabbage to a healthy veggie poriyal.
Make sure to chop or grate the carrot that helps to cook faster.

FAQ:

How do you serve cabbage poriyal?

This cabbage Thoran is best served with Garlic curry, poricha kulambu, squash sambar, Rasam.

How long can we store?

This muttaikose poriyal can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 days in an air-tight container. I don’t recommend storing for a longer time, as we have included coconut for this recipe.

Can I make it without coconut?

Yes! Absolutely.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of cabbage
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 3/4 th cup of coconut (grated)
  • 1 green chilli
  • 3 dry red chilli
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Heat coconut oil in sauce pan/kadai. Add mustard seeds once its splutters, add urad dal fry for 10 to 20 seconds.
  2. Tear the dry redchillies, add in.
  3. Add chopped onion, salt fry till the onions turns translucent.
  4. Add sliced green chilli, fry for few seconds.
  5. Then in goes chopped cabbage.Stir and cook for 3 minutes
  6. Add water, cover and cook for another 5 minutes. Stirring occasionally.
  7. Once the cabbage is cooked, add grated coconut.Stir the cabbage for 1 minute.
  8. Cabbage poriyal/cabbage thoran is ready.
