This can be served as a curry or just a side dish! Both the ways this recipe works perfectly.

What other lentils can be used for papad dal curry?

Split moong dal can also be used instead of or along with channa dal.

Can I add coconut milk for this recipe?

Yes, you can add thick 1/2cup of coconut milk for this recipe and add 1 tbs of fennel powder.

How do you serve appalam kootu?

This Appalam kootu can be served with garlic curry or any tamarind based gravy.

How to make Appalam Kootu/papad dal curry with step by step pictures:

Coconut and fennel seeds are added in blenderGrind fennel seeds+coconut

coconut paste is in blenderGrind into a fine paste by adding 1/3 cup of water

a spoon of channa dal is takenPressure cook the channa dal till nice and soft and keep aside.

fennel seeds is being sizzled in sauce panHeat up a pan add in oil and fennel seeds.

curry leaves and fennel seeds are taken in saute panAdd in curry leaves.

onion and curry leaves is being sauted in saute pan Add in onions and saute until the onions are translucent

tomatoes are being sauted in saute panAdd in tomatoes.

a spoon of salt is being added to gravyAdd in salt.

chili powder is being added to onion tomato masala in saute panAdd in chilli powder and saute for 2 to 3 mins

cooked channa dal is being added to tomato gravy in sauce panAdd in cooked channa dal.

grind coconut paste is being added to channa dal gravyAdd in coconut paste.

tomato gravy is being cooked and coriender leaves is sprinkled on topAdd in water and cook for 5 mins and switch off the stove.

fried papads are kept on a small plateDeepFry the pappad.

This Appalam Kootu / papad dal curry is exemplary easy to make, Seriously a Flavor bomb. Crispy fried papad totally drenched in delicious lentil gravy makes this wonderfully delicious and whole lot of YUM!


Ingredients

Scale
  • 15 Pappad
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 2 Onions
  • 3 Tomatoes
  • 1 cup Channa dal (pressure cooked)
  • 2 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • TO GRIND:
  • 5 pieces Coconut
  • 1 tsp Fennel seeds

Instructions

Prep work:

  1. Grind the coconut+fennel seeds into a fine paste.
  2. Pressure cook the channa dal and keep aside.

To make Papad Dal Curry

  1. Heat up the oil in the pan, add fennel seeds and curry leaves.
  2. Add the onions and cook tip the onions turns translucent.
  3. Add the tomatoes and cook for 3 mins.
  4. Add in the chilli powder, turmeric powder and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Add in the grinded coconut paste, channa dal, water and cook for 5 mins then switch off the stove.
  6. Fry the pappad.
  7. Mix the pappad to the gravy and let it rest for 10 mins.
  8. Sprinkle some coriander leaves.
  9. Serve Hot with rice, Chapati, idly or dosa.

Notes

Can I add coconut milk for this recipe?

      Yes! fry the appalam/pappad in oil before you add to the gravy.
