How to make Appalam Kootu/papad dal curry with step by step pictures:
Grind fennel seeds+coconut
Grind into a fine paste by adding 1/3 cup of water
Pressure cook the channa dal till nice and soft and keep aside.
Heat up a pan add in oil and fennel seeds.
Add in curry leaves.
Add in onions and saute until the onions are translucent
Add in tomatoes.
Add in salt.
Add in chilli powder and saute for 2 to 3 mins
Add in cooked channa dal.
Add in coconut paste.
Add in water and cook for 5 mins and switch off the stove.
DeepFry the pappad.
Add the pappad.
Mix everything well and keep in simmer for 2 mins.
Appalam kootu is ready to be served.

This Appalam Kootu / papad dal curry is exemplary easy to make, Seriously a Flavor bomb. Crispy fried papad totally drenched in delicious lentil gravy makes this wonderfully delicious and whole lot of YUM!
Ingredients
- 15 Pappad
- 2 tsp Oil
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds
- 1 sprig Curry leaves
- 2 Onions
- 3 Tomatoes
- 1 cup Channa dal (pressure cooked)
- 2 tsp Chilli powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- TO GRIND:
- 5 pieces Coconut
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds
Instructions
Prep work:
- Grind the coconut+fennel seeds into a fine paste.
- Pressure cook the channa dal and keep aside.
To make Papad Dal Curry
- Heat up the oil in the pan, add fennel seeds and curry leaves.
- Add the onions and cook tip the onions turns translucent.
- Add the tomatoes and cook for 3 mins.
- Add in the chilli powder, turmeric powder and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
- Add in the grinded coconut paste, channa dal, water and cook for 5 mins then switch off the stove.
- Fry the pappad.
- Mix the pappad to the gravy and let it rest for 10 mins.
- Sprinkle some coriander leaves.
- Serve Hot with rice, Chapati, idly or dosa.
Notes
Can I add coconut milk for this recipe?
